To improve access to information, communication and education services in the two rural areas covered by the project, Best Ray has provided secondary schools and Community Energy Resources Centers, with computers, printers and internet access together with PV solar system to supply electricity. Training on computer use have been also provided by the project.
CERCs: Since January 2010 the two CERCs of Oldonyosambu and Ngarenanyuki wards have been provided with a laptop computer, internet connection, a printer and electricity is supplied by a PV solar installation of 270 W in AC. Computer training have been organized for teachers, students and community members. The best trainees are now the responsible of the computer services at the CERCs and are organizing themselves new training for local people. Now the communities can have access through the CERCs to new services such as document typing and printing, mobile battery recharging, internet surfing which were not available before in those areas.
Secondary schools:
In April 2010 Best Ray has completed the installation of its most significant energy system: the secondary school of Oldonyosambu (about 1000 students and 15 teachers) has been supplied with a computer room of 13 laptops, 1 printer and internet connection, run by a PV system of 840 W, installed by the solar Best Ray expert together with the trained local technicians. Computer training for the students and teacher have been conducted in order to give to the school the skills to use this resources. In October 2010 the students will be able for the first time to sit for the computer part of their final national examination, which will also allow them in the future to be more competitive in the work world. The trained teachers will follow in the next years the student on learning computer. The computer room will support the professional development of teachers, provide knowledge dissemination and a more efficient education services.
In the Kisimiri Chini Secondary School of Ngarenanyuki Ward Best Ray gave an important contribute providing technical local skill to install a computer room and a solar system which was provided by a private donor. Best Ray also organized computer trainings for students and teachers, and supplied internet connection to the computer room.
Providing internet access to a remote rural community will allow people, especially the young, to communicate easily and accessing all kinds of information and services on the Web, while remaining in their rural settings.
